AMEC to support EDF with construction in the UK

23 April 2010

International engineering and project management company, AMEC, has signed a major contract with EDF Group to support its architect engineering operation for the proposed delivery of four new EPR reactors at Hinkley Point and Sizewell in the UK.

The contract will run for 11 years, with an option to extend for a further four. Under the contract AMEC will work with EDF in France and the UK in the key areas of project management, engineering and construction management. AMEC will also help EDF project management teams with engineering and site management activities, together with providing specific engineering studies for the non-nuclear sections of plant in the power stations.

AMEC CEO Samir Brikho says the firm is “delighted to have been awarded this contract in the strategically important nuclear energy sector.”

EDF Energy’s Managing Director Nuclear New Build, Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson said: “We are delighted that AMEC will be part of the team we are bringing together to support our nuclear new build project in the UK. We want to work with many leading British companies in relationships that will last many years to deliver our plans for low carbon new nuclear.

“Our project will employ several thousand people onsite during the construction phase and many more offsite both in EDF and throughout the supply chain,” Cadoux-Hudson continued.

EDF plans for its first EPR to come online by the end of 2017, although this is still subject to getting regulatory approval of the EPR design and a construction licence.
