UAE regulator grows up

20 March 2014

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, FANR, has announced that it will start to collect fees for organizations using radioactive sources from 1 January 2015. These fees will amount to 90% of the organization's budget.

Fees will be charged for medical radiography, industrial radiography and for nuclear power applications. They range from 1500 AED ($400) for a dental x-ray machine to AED 10000 for a linear accelerator or for nuclear material as defined in the safeguards agreement.

It is standard practice in the US and UK for governments to charge operators in medicine and industry, rather than taxpayers, for regulatory activities.
