28 September 2001

Russia’s Atomic Energy Ministry (Minatom) and nuclear utility Rosenergoatom have decided to start building a second unit at Volgodonsk (formerly known as Rostov) as soon as unit 1 is commissioned, later this year. Unit 2 is scheduled to go into operation in 2004. Unit 1, first connected to the grid in February 2001, began delivering 998MW to the power grid of the North Caucasus in September, according to Rosenergatom. During October workers will conduct 46 more tests.
