Duke to pursue COL for AP1000

26 October 2005

Duke Power is to prepare a combined construction and operating licence (COL) for two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.

Westinghouse will partner with The Shaw Group for engineering work necessary to support Duke’s COL process. The 1100MWe PWR, set to receive design certification in December, is the only Generation III+ plant to receive final design approval (FDA) from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Westinghouse welcomed the move with Steve Tritch, president and chief executive saying: “As a result of this action, Duke will be in a position to commence construction of new nuclear plants as early as the 2010 timeframe.”
