New Mexico Senator Pete V. Domenici has broken ground at the construction site for the National Enrichment Facility (NEF).

Domenici, chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee (NRC), joined representatives from Louisiana Energy Services (LES) to begin construction on the $1.5 billion uranium enrichment facility which is due to become fully operational by 2013. Uranium enrichment could begin in 2009.

LES, a collection of nuclear energy companies including Urenco, Exelon Corp, Entergy Corp and Duke Energy Corp, will use Urenco’s gas centrifuge technology.
