Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre and the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania have signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in business and research.
The MOU also covers the promotion of joint solutions and services in the field of nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management to the international market.
Ignalina, which comprises two RBMK-1500 reactors, is currently undergoing decommissioning. The work involves the unloading of nuclear fuel, equipment and building decontamination and dismantling, radioactive waste treatment and storage.
“Our decommissioning activities are co-financed by the European Union, said Janulevicius. “Co-operation in the field of nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management with VTT as the leading research and technology centre in Finland is very appreciated by us. We aim at conducting decommissioning in [a] more cost-efficient way while adhering to high standards of safety.”
The MOU was signed on 19 September by Darius Janulevicius, director general of Ignalina nuclear power plant and Erja Turunen, executive vice president, Smart Industry and Energy systems at VTT.
