The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of 20 Emirati students from its Diploma in Nuclear Technology programme. This marks a key advancement in localising the operations and maintenance teams within the United Arab Emirates civilian nuclear sector.
The comprehensive 24-month vocational programme, launched in 2024, was specially designed for high-performing UAE National high school graduates. It took place at ENEC headquarters and the Barakah NPP. The curriculum blends intensive theoretical instruction with practical training in science, engineering, and plant mechanics. The 20 graduates will immediately transition into vital operational support roles at the Barakah as plant operators and maintenance technicians.
ENEC said the programme forms part of its broader strategy to develop national talent for the nuclear sector. Through six talent development initiatives, the company has helped more than 2,000 UAE Nationals contribute to the development and operation of the Barakah plant.
Barakah is the first multi-unit operational NPP in the Arab world. Construction began in 2011. Korea Electric Power Company (Kepco) led the consortium that is building the plant comprising four APR1400 reactors. Unit 1 was connected to the grid in 2020, followed by unit 2 in 2021 and unit 3 in 2022. Unit 1 began commercial operation in April 2021 and unit 2 in 2022, unit 3 in 2023 and unit 4 in 2024. The four units contribute up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity.
The graduation ceremony, held in Abu Dhabi, was attended by ENEC Managing Director and Group CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi, along with senior company officials. “Today’s graduation marks an important milestone in our continued efforts to develop a sustainable pipeline of homegrown UAE national talent to support the long-term success of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme,” Al Hammadi said. “As we enter the next phase of operational excellence at Barakah, investing in the development of skilled Emirati professionals remains a strategic priority.”
He added: “This programme reflects our commitment to building national capability, equipping the next generation of our young, talented Emiratis with the expertise required to support safe, reliable and efficient nuclear operations for the next 60 years and beyond. We are proud of the achievements of this first cohort and look forward to seeing them flourish in their nuclear energy careers and contribute to the continued success of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant and the wider UAE energy sector.”
