The Directorate for Nuclear Power Plant construction under Uzbekistan’s Atomic Energy Agency (Uzatom) has signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) with China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas (CNOS), a subsidiary of CNNC, according to Uzatom’s press service.

In November, Uzatom and CNNC had discussed the potential for adopting China’s expertise in building small NPPs. They also explored opportunities to enhance uranium ore mining, processing, and the production of high-value nuclear fuel.

The MOC was signed during the international conference, Prospects for the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy in the Sustainable Development of Member States of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation: International and National Experience held in Samarkand, where a number of other important strategic documents were also signed. These included:

  • Additions to the Framework Country Programme between the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA);
  • Memorandum of Understanding between the Atomic Energy Agency and the World Nuclear Association;
  • Memorandum of cooperation between the Atomic Energy Agency and the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences;
  • Agreement between the Atomic Energy Agency and Assystem Engineering & Operation Services;
  • Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation between the Tashkent Branch of Russia’s Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education National Research Nuclear University MEPhI and the Research Institute for the Development of Digital Technologies & Artificial Intelligence.
