US-based NuScale Power Corporation is deploying nuclear-specific AI tools to significantly speed up reactor development and cut information search times by up to 80%. Announced on 25 August 2026, this strategic alliance combines NuScale’s proprietary small modular reactor (SMR) expertise, Nuclearn’s AtomAssist AI platform, and Nuclear Promise X’s (NPX’s) implementation discipline to create highly specialised, traceable workflow tools for the nuclear industry.

As advanced reactor projects move from design into deployment, a key task is making timely, informed decisions across a growing volume of engineering information, licensing evidence, technical standards, and institutional knowledge. Rapid, traceable retrieval of information is essential to maintaining programme schedules.

The initiative is built on a specialised collaboration, with each partner filling a unique operational role. NuScale Power supplies proprietary advanced reactor engineering knowledge and licensing content. Nuclearn provides the AtomAssist platform featuring nuclear-specific language models. NPX integrates the technology directly into day-to-day engineering and project workflows.

Unlike general Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT or search engines, this platform is specifically grounded to prevent hallucinations and ensure strict industry compliance. Engineers can trace generated answers back to the original controlled source documentation. The AI recognises specialised nuclear terminology, design data, and licensing regulations.

It is maintained by Nuclearn and NPX to prioritise data security and quality standards without cutting regulatory corners. An initial proof of concept successfully demonstrated that the tools drop information-retrieval time by up to 80%. By scaling this knowledge across technical teams, NuScale Power aims to accelerate its commercial deployment of 77 MWe NuScale Power Modules (NPMs).

The NMP is a pressurised water reactor with all the components for steam generation and heat exchange incorporated into a single 77 MWe unit, using standard light water reactor fuel. It is the first SMR design to receive approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). NuScale offers the units as VOYGR plants with a range of modules: a VOYGR-12 power plant comprising 12 modules is capable of generating 924 MWe.
