The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced that it was imposing a $60,000 civil penalty on Nuclear Management Company (NMC) for failing to provide “complete and accurate” information about a problem involving the two emergency diesel generators at Prairie Island 2.
NMC said it accepted NRC’s decision, and would pay the fine for the level 3 violation, the second least severe on NRC’s four-level system.
The violation was related to supplying NRC with industry analysis in April 2001 regarding the compatibility of fuel and lubricating oils. Plant employees incorrectly concluded that the industry analysis was not relevant to their evaluation of operational issues regarding the emergency diesels.
NRC also said it would issue a notice of violation to an NMC employee who “deliberately removed” a document from a group of documents about to be given to an NRC special inspection team investigating the circumstances behind the diesel oil incompatibility. NRC said NMC promptly provided the document.
