US and India reach nuclear deal

26 July 2007

Agreement has been reached on a civilian nuclear co-operation accord between the US and India, the BBC reports.

The deal, which gives India access to US technology in return for allowing the country’s nuclear facilities to be opened for inspection, was reached in principle two years ago but has bogged down over the details. Now, India’s foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee has reportedly said that all of country's concerns have been addressed.

The finalised deal must be passed by the US Congress, while India also needs approval from the Nuclear Suppliers Group of countries.
