As expected, the French lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, has passed a bill that sets out provisions for an underground repository for the country’s high-level nuclear waste materials.

The site is to be developed by 2025.

With the site to be chosen by 2015, the deep geological disposal option followed a 15 year review of disposal options.

The government has said that the process will be ‘reversible’ in case new technologies are discovered for treating the waste, and the bill provides for research into this area.

The bill also maintained a ban on the storage of foreign waste in France.
