Doosan Heavy to supply anti-seismic system for China’s Tianwan NPP

12 August 2021

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction said on 11 August that it had signed a contract with China Techenergy Co Ltd (CTEC), a subsidiary of China General Nuclear (CGN), to supply Industrial Anti-seismic Protection Systems (IAPS) that will be installed at units 7&8 of the Tianwan NPP in Jiangsu province. This followed Doosan Heavy’s order in March to supply IAPS for units 3&4 of the Xudabao NPP in Liaoning province. Doosan will supply IAPS based on the FirmSys platform to Tianwan 7&8 by 2024.

The IAPS is a key part of the Instrumentation and controls (I&C) system and functions to automatically shut down the reactor if the earthquake sensor reaches or exceeds the set value during operation of the plant. Doosan Heavy has supplied IAPS to all 28 nuclear power units in Korea. Kiyong Na, CEO of Doosan Heavy’s Nuclear Business Group said, "We were able to establish a relationship of trust with our customer with proven technology based on abundant experience and a track record in the domestic nuclear market.”

He added: "We will commit to successfully carry out Xudapu units 3 and 4 and Tianwan units 7 and 8 projects with CTEC as the general contractor, and at the same time continue to pursue new opportunities to participate in overseas nuclear power plant markets."

Tianwan 7&8 and Xudabao 3&4 are VVER-1200 reactors being constructed by Rosatom under agreements signed between Russia and China in 2018. In January 2018, Doosan signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CTEC to promote cooperation.
