Russia’s Federal Service for Environmental, Technological & Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) has issued a licence to nuclear utility Rosenergoatom to operate unit 1 of the Kalinin NPP until 28 June 2044. During an inspection at the beginning of 2025, the Rostekhnadzor commission approved the documents provided by the NPP, required to justify further operation of the unit. The commission assessed measures for modernisation and replacement of components that had exhausted their service life and conducted an inspection.

“The reliable operation of the Kalinin NPP makes an important contribution to ensuring the energy security of central Russia, significantly affects the socio-economic development of the region and serves as an additional guarantor for the well-being of residents,” noted Kalinin NPP Director Viktor Ignatov.

Kalinin NPP has four reactors. Units 1&2 are V-338 model VVER-1000s which began commercial operation in 1985 and 1987. Kalinin 3&4 are both 950 MWe V-320 model VVER-1000 reactors, which were completed in 2004 and 2012. Kalinin 1 received a 10-year licence extension to 2025 in 2014. In 2019 it underwent extensive modernisation and upgrading. Unit 2 has an extended operating licence until November 2038. Units 3&4 within the design period can operate until 2034 and 2041, respectively, after which they will seek licence extensions.
