The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued a safety evaluation report (SER) for an early site permit (ESP) for Exelon’s Clinton site.
The SER summarises the NRC’s evaluation of the site’s suitability in terms of seismology, geology, and other environmental and safety factors. Before a final decision on an ESP is made, the NRC also needs to complete an environmental impact statement, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards must issue a report on the ESP application, and the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board must conclude its hearing on the application. The NRC said it expects to finish this process by early 2007.
Exelon filed the ESP application for the Clinton site on 25 September 2003. The ESP process allows an applicant to address site-related issues, such as environmental impacts, for possible new units at the site. If approved, the permit would give Exelon up to 20 years to decide whether to build any new nuclear units on the site.
