Entergy Nuclear will continue to provide management services to the Maine Yankee nuclear station (900 MWe PWR) through the end of the plant’s decommissioning phase. A long-term contract signed 1 October calls for Entergy to provide management oversight through 2004.
Entergy was initially retained by Maine Yankee in February 1997 to improve the plant’s performance. The focus shifted in August 1997 to supporting post-shutdown activities after the Maine Yankee Board of Directors permanently closed the plant for economic reasons.
Under the new agreement, Entergy will be rewarded if it oversees the decommissioning project in a manner that meets or exceeds high targets for safety performance, cost-effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
Dismantlement of Maine Yankee is scheduled to begin as soon as mobilisation is complete. Maine Yankee previously signed a contract with Stone & Webster Engineering which is serving as the Decommissioning Operations Contractor.
