Ukraine regulator agrees extension for dismantling of Chornobyl sarcophagus

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine has extended by six years the licence relating to dismantling the most unstable parts of the shelter hastily constructed over unit 4 of the Chornobyl NPP (ChNPP) in the 206 days following the 1986 explosion 1986 accident that destroyed the reactor. Work to dismantle and stabilise the sarcophagus is currently conducted inside the New Safe Confinement (NSC) built to enclose the damaged facility.

Rolls-Royce unveils model of space microreactor

Rolls-Royce unveiled a nuclear Space Micro-Reactor Concept Model at the UK Space Conference in Belfast. It is part of the UK Space Agency backed research programme to deliver an initial demonstration of a UK lunar modular nuclear reactor. In March, Rolls-Royce secured funding of £2.9m ($3.65m) from the UK Space Agency to support research into how nuclear power could be used to support a future Moon base for astronauts.

COP28: 22 countries target tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050

At the 28th Conference of the Parties to the original 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), 22 countries signed a declaration supporting tripling nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The document was signed by the heads of state, or senior officials, from Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ghana, Hungary, Japan, South Korea, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the USA. China and Russia did not sign, although they have the world’s fastest growing and most ambitious nuclear power programmes.

French government and EDF reach agreement on nuclear electricity pricing

Following several months of negotiations, the French government and EDF have agreed a price for nuclear electricity. Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire told a press conference that the agreement “lays the foundations for new French nuclear regulation and brings EDF into the 21st century”. It guarantees a reference price level of around €70 ($75) per MWh for nuclear electricity with a ceiling of €110/MWh.

IAEA’s 29th Fusion Energy Conference attracts 2000 participants

Opening the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 29th Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2023) in London, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi began by wishing a happy 40th anniversary to the Joint European Torus (JET) which operates at Culham near Oxford. Jet was “the first tritium experiment in Europe, breaker of scientific records, producer of generations of accomplished scientists and engineers, and a true magnet for international collaboration,” he said.

France and NEA host conference to promote nuclear energy

The Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference, organised by the French Ministry for Energy Transition and the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) in Paris, resulted in two communiques signed by energy ministers and industry representatives emphasising the need for nuclear energy.

IAEA upgrades database on discharges of radionuclides from nuclear installations

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) database on Discharges of Radionuclides to the Atmosphere & the Aquatic Environment (DIRATA) has been enhanced this year with additional data, such as radionuclide-specific annual discharges, and new user-friendly features.

Russia offers fuel design for Western PWRs

Experts from Rosatom's fuel company TVEL presented details at an international nuclear fuel conference of Russian-designed TVS-K fuel for Western-design pressurised water reactors (PWRs). Specialists from TVEL at the Water Reactor Fuel Performance Meeting, which incorporated the TopFuel conference, in Xi'an, China, described developments in fuel for Russian-designed VVER reactors and for small modular reactors.

Bulgaria and Ukraine agree to energy co-operation

Bulgarian Energy Minister Rumen Radev and Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the field of energy during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Sofia. The two ministers noted that the MOU aims at broad development of energy cooperation “to support the economic and infrastructural development of the whole region”. The MOU provides for cooperation in nuclear energy, gas, green energy and energy transition including smart networks.

Dealing with cracking in the French nuclear fleet

EDF is confident about fixes it is implementing to address the problem of defects in safety injection and residual heat removal system pipework in French pressurised water reactors. The problem is mainly due to stress corrosion cracking, but in recent months thermal fatigue defects have also been encountered.

CGN releases Sustainable Development Report

China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has released its 2023 Sustainable Development Report at a press conference in Paris. The report was presented in three languages, Chinese, English, and French. CGN Director Li Li noted that, as an international clean energy company, CGN “is committed to nuclear power as its cornerstone while actively pursuing the development of clean energy sources including nuclear, wind, and solar power”.

Iran says no IAEA cameras are operating at its Natanz facility

The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) has rebutted media reports that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Tehran had agreed to reinstall 10 monitoring cameras at the Natanz nuclear complex in central Iran. AEOI spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said the reactivation of IAEA cameras had taken place at a nuclear plant in Isfahan, which he defined as a “centrifuge manufacturing facility”. He said that Natanz had been incorrectly identified by various media sources as the site.

US supports opening of NuScale's Energy Exploration Centre in Romania

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB) have launched a NuScale Power Energy Exploration Centre (E2 Centre) at the University’s Faculty of Energy Engineering. It includes a control room simulator for NuScale’s VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) power plant. It is the first E2 Centre to be established outside the USA. The first E2 Centre was opened at Oregon State University in 2020.

Hungary confirms no changes in Paks II contract

Hungarian Foreign Affairs & Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó has confirmed that the modifications made to the contract for construction of the Paks II NPP in April represent only minor technical changes. He told a press conference that “In both the financing and construction contracts, we agreed with the Russian partner [Rosatom] on amendments to Paks II. These related to the structure of the investment and the executor but left the project company untouched.”

Polish organisations co-operate on SMRs

Polish fuels concern PKN Orlen and Michal Solowow's Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) have teamed up with the National Fund for Environmental Protection & Water Management (NFOSiGW) to cooperate in the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). NFOSiGW announced earlier that together with OSGE they will work to prepare, construct and commercialise nuclear energy facilities utilising US BWRX-300 GE Hitachi (GEH) reactors.

Grossi sees positive results from Iran trip

During a two day visit to Iran, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi held high level talks with Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Affairs Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and Vice-President of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami. The visit followed reports that particles of uranium enriched to 83.7% had been detected at Iran's underground Fordow plant when Iran had formally notified IAEA of enrichment only up to 60%. There was also an outstanding issue of uranium particles identified at three locations not normally subject to IAEA inspections.

South Korea plans to build fusion reactor after 2035

South Korea has begun preparations to begin building a nuclear fusion reactor after 2035. It aims to produce electric power around 2050 in a bid to keep up with the intensifying international competition for the future clean and limitless energy, the Ministry of Science, Information & Communication Technology said.

European Parliament calls for Russia sanctions to include nuclear

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging European Union (EU) leaders to extend the sanctions against Russia introduced as a result of the war with Ukraine to include nuclear energy. The motion, was adopted by 489 votes to 36, with 49 abstentions.

Grossi holds talks with Italian leaders and Pope Francis

Italy is a steadfast partner in the challenges facing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today with a long history of achievements in the nuclear field, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commented, as he travelled to Rome. During his two-day visit, Grossi met with Italy’s President and Foreign Minister, as well as with Pope Francis. Discussions covered a variety of issues including nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, nuclear non-proliferation, and the role of nuclear science and technology in combating climate change.
