US supports opening of NuScale's Energy Exploration Centre in Romania

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest (UPB) have launched a NuScale Power Energy Exploration Centre (E2 Centre) at the University’s Faculty of Energy Engineering. It includes a control room simulator for NuScale’s VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) power plant. It is the first E2 Centre to be established outside the USA. The first E2 Centre was opened at Oregon State University in 2020.

Hungary confirms no changes in Paks II contract

Hungarian Foreign Affairs & Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó has confirmed that the modifications made to the contract for construction of the Paks II NPP in April represent only minor technical changes. He told a press conference that “In both the financing and construction contracts, we agreed with the Russian partner [Rosatom] on amendments to Paks II. These related to the structure of the investment and the executor but left the project company untouched.”

Polish organisations co-operate on SMRs

Polish fuels concern PKN Orlen and Michal Solowow's Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) have teamed up with the National Fund for Environmental Protection & Water Management (NFOSiGW) to cooperate in the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). NFOSiGW announced earlier that together with OSGE they will work to prepare, construct and commercialise nuclear energy facilities utilising US BWRX-300 GE Hitachi (GEH) reactors.

Grossi sees positive results from Iran trip

During a two day visit to Iran, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi held high level talks with Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Affairs Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and Vice-President of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami. The visit followed reports that particles of uranium enriched to 83.7% had been detected at Iran's underground Fordow plant when Iran had formally notified IAEA of enrichment only up to 60%. There was also an outstanding issue of uranium particles identified at three locations not normally subject to IAEA inspections.

South Korea plans to build fusion reactor after 2035

South Korea has begun preparations to begin building a nuclear fusion reactor after 2035. It aims to produce electric power around 2050 in a bid to keep up with the intensifying international competition for the future clean and limitless energy, the Ministry of Science, Information & Communication Technology said.

European Parliament calls for Russia sanctions to include nuclear

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging European Union (EU) leaders to extend the sanctions against Russia introduced as a result of the war with Ukraine to include nuclear energy. The motion, was adopted by 489 votes to 36, with 49 abstentions.

Italy is a steadfast partner in the challenges facing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today with a long history of achievements in the nuclear field, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commented, as he travelled to Rome. During his two-day visit, Grossi met with Italy’s President and Foreign Minister, as well as with Pope Francis. Discussions covered a variety of issues including nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, nuclear non-proliferation, and the role of nuclear science and technology in combating climate change.

Belgium and Engie agree to extend operation of Doel 4 and Tihange 3

Belgium and French power utility Engie have agreed to extend the life of unit 4 at the Doel NPP and unit 3 at the Tihange NPP by 10 years. This “Heads of Terms and Commencement of LTO Studies Agreement” paves the way for the conclusion of more detailed agreements in the upcoming months. It provides for the immediate start of environmental and technical studies before formal authorisations related to the extension are issued. The two parties in July 2022 had signed a "non-binding letter of intent" concerning the life extension. The two 1.03 GWe reactors have been in service since 1985.

Westinghouse and KHNP may both build NPPs in Poland

Poland’s government has formally adopted a resolution on the implementation of its nuclear project “using a proven and safe technology in cooperation with the American company Westinghouse Nuclear”, according to the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The decision to use Westinghouse AP1000 technology been announced earlier, on 28 October. Both France’s EDF and South Korean state-run company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) had also submitted bids for the contract.

US commits funding for Romanian SMR

US President Joe Biden has said at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Germany that the USA is committing $14 million toward a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study to provide the basis for the deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) power plant in Romania. “This action is the next step in fulfilling the pledge made by Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Romania President Klaus Iohannis at the 2021 UN Conference on Climate Change in Glasgow (COP26), where they announced their intent to deploy an SMR in Romania in partnership with US firm NuScale Power,” the State Department noted in a statement.
