Hungary plans life extension for Paks NPP

Attila Steiner, Secretary of State for Energy at Hungary’s Ministry of Technology & Industry, introduced a bill at a recent meeting of the state assembly (unicameral parliament), proposing that Paks NPP should be authorised to operate for an additional 20 years.

Westinghouse and KHNP may both build NPPs in Poland

Poland’s government has formally adopted a resolution on the implementation of its nuclear project “using a proven and safe technology in cooperation with the American company Westinghouse Nuclear”, according to the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The decision to use Westinghouse AP1000 technology been announced earlier, on 28 October. Both France’s EDF and South Korean state-run company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) had also submitted bids for the contract.

US commits funding for Romanian SMR

US President Joe Biden has said at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Germany that the USA is committing $14 million toward a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study to provide the basis for the deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) power plant in Romania. “This action is the next step in fulfilling the pledge made by Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Romania President Klaus Iohannis at the 2021 UN Conference on Climate Change in Glasgow (COP26), where they announced their intent to deploy an SMR in Romania in partnership with US firm NuScale Power,” the State Department noted in a statement.

Two European Parliament committees oppose taxonomy plans

Lawmakers in the European Parliament have formed a cross-party coalition, which aims to block nuclear energy and fossil gas from receiving a green investment label under the EU’s green finance taxonomy. The coalition has objected to a European Commission proposal, tabled at the end of 2021, to include fossil gas and nuclear power in the EU’s list of green investments as “transitional” sources of energy. The European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee members, at a joint meeting on 14 June, voted by 76 to 62, with four abstentions and six who did not vote, to oppose the EU taxonomy plans.

Iran begins removal of IAEA monitoring systems

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told a press conference that Iran had informed the Agency of its intention to remove 27 cameras as well as an online monitoring system and a flowmeter from its nuclear facilities.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said on 3 June he is continuing his efforts to organise an IAEA mission to Ukraine’s largest NPP, Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia, to carry out important nuclear safety, security and safeguards activities at this site. With respect to safeguards, transmission of remote safeguards data to IAEA headquarters from the Zaporizhzhia NPP stopped on 30 May, the Agency said. However, with the assistance of the plant operator, the IAEA is continuing technical attempts to re-establish the data transmission

Electricite de France (EDF) says its Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear plant in the UK risks being late and over-budget as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and supply chain disruption weigh on progress at the site, Bloomberg reported on 7 May. The risk of delays has increased since the company’s update in January 2021 because of the combination of the pandemic, the UK’s exit from the European Union, lower civil productivity, the Ukrainian conflict and supply chain disruption, EDF said in a presentation.

Hungary receives Russian nuclear fuel by air

Hungary received the first shipment of nuclear fuel for the Paks nuclear power plant from by air from Russia on 6 April, after the war in Ukraine made rail transport impossible, according to Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
