Polish companies co-operate on SMRs

Polish oil & gas company PKN Orlen on 29 June signed a cooperation agreement with private chemicals company Synthos, Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek told a news conference. "We have signed a framework agreement...regarding the implementation of zero-emission technology, nuclear technology, small and micro-nuclear reactors," he said, adding that companies should agree on details within three months. Poland, which is heavily dependent on coal for power generation, plans to increase its share of emissions-free nuclear and renewable energy generation.

Nuclear organisations say nuclear is essential for net zero

More than 100 nuclear societies and NGOs, part of the Nuclear for Climate initiative, on 2 June issued a statement calling on world leaders to "follow the science" and recognise that nuclear energy output must at least double by 2050 to meet global net-zero targets. The initiative is targeted at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) being held in Glasgow from 1-12 November this year.

Tests at Zaporozhye NPP prepare Ukraine for integration with European grid

Ukraine nuclear utility Energoatom, together with Ukrenergo, on 8-9 May conducted tests at unit 1 of the Zaporozhye NPP to confirm compliance with the requirements of the Transmission System Code in order to obtain a certificate that will entitle Energoatom to bring the power unit to the Ancillary Services Market (RDP). This is an important stage in the preparation of the United Energy System (UES) of Ukraine for integration with the United European Continental Energy System, Energoatom said.

Fission reactions increasing at damaged Chernobyl NPP

Fission reactions have been reported again in uranium fuel masses buried beneath the reactor hall at unit 4 of the Chernobyl NPP in Ukraine which was destroyed in the 1986 explosion, Science magazine reported on 5 May. Sensors are tracking a rising number of neutrons, a signal of fission, emanating from one sub-reactor room, Anatolii Doroshenko, from the Institute for Nuclear Power Plant Safety (IPBAE) of the Ukraine Academy of Sciences, reported during discussions about dismantling the reactor. “There are many uncertainties,” said IPBAE’s Maxim Saveliev. “But we can’t rule out the possibility of [an] accident.” The neutron counts are rising slowly, Saveliev noted, and there is still time to find a solution to the threat.

Leaders’ Summit on Climate attracts world leaders, businessmen and environmentalists

The US-led Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held on 22 and 23 April as a video conference, attracted 40 world leaders (presidents and prime ministers) including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also taking part were some 24 other speakers at ministerial level (environment, defence, economy) in addition to Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as almost 40 heads of environmental organisations, indigenous communities and leading businessmen, including Bill Gates. The event coincided with Earth Day, an annual event first held in 1970.

EC indicates nuclear will be added to EU Taxonomy

In a communication on 21 April, the European Commission (EC) effectively made a number of amendments to the EU Taxonomy Regulation, which entered into force in July 2020, signalling the inclusion in the taxonomy of nuclear energy. This followed significant pressure from the nuclear industry and NGOs as well as a report from the EC’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) which found no evidence that nuclear energy does more harm to human health or to the environment than other electricity production technologies already included in the Taxonomy.

IAEA’s Grossi reaches agreement for technical discussions with Iran

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director general Rafael Mariano Grossi on 4 March told a press conference in Vienna that a new agreement had been reached with Iran for face-to-face meetings of technical experts to take place in early April. Grossi said the aim of the agreement is to tackle outstanding technical issues and for the agency and Iran to stop "talking past each other".
