Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in the field of small modular reactors (SMRs) with state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The agreement includes exchanging technical information related to SMRs, jointly reviewing the possibility of introducing SMRs tailored to Thailand’s needs, and supporting site visits and training programmes. A working group will be formed with participation from both parties to promote R&D cooperation and human and material exchanges in the nuclear field.

This is seen as an attempt by KHNP to secure a foothold in the Asian SMR market, following the recent finalisation of the Dukovany NPP contract in the Czech Republic. “This agreement will serve as an opportunity to strengthen the foundation for the peaceful use of nuclear energy in Thailand and to concretize the possibility of decarbonization transition through SMRs,” a KHNP official stated.

EGAT, which supplies about 30% of Thailand’s electricity, is investing in diversifying its energy mix in line with Thailand’s carbon neutrality 2050 goal. EGAT Deputy Governor Thidae Iamsai noted: “SMRs are a promising technology that can achieve both energy security and carbon neutrality simultaneously. Cooperation with KHNP, which has world-class nuclear technology and operational experience, will make a significant contribution to EGAT.”

Park In-sik, head of the Export Business Division at KHNP, said, “This MOU is an important starting point for KHNP to become Thailand’s energy transition partner. We will continue to cooperate closely with EGAT and fully launch our entry into the SMR market in Southeast Asia.”
