Rosatom’s Fuel Division TVELand Uzbekistan’s Atomic Energy Agency (Uzatom) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) covering radioactive waste management and the decommissioning of nuclear and radiation hazardous facilities.
Under the MOU, TVEL will provide expert support in the development of a national system for radioactive waste management, as well as in the training of specialists. It also provides for the exchange of best technical and scientific practices in the field of radioactive waste management and decommissioning of nuclear power plants.
TVEL is working to build interaction between states on issues of radioactive waste management, noted Eduard Nikitin, Director of the Unit for the Decommissioning of Nuclear and Radiation Hazardous Facilities and Radwaste Management at TVEL “Joint seminars, training and technical tours to nuclear energy facilities are held on a regular basis. This kind of work makes it possible to formulate general principles for the safe handling of radioactive waste and the decommissioning of radiation hazardous facilities.”
Rosatom is also supporting Belarus and Kazakhstan with radwaste management and decommissioning. In 2021, by decision of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Economic Council, TVEL was appointed as the Basic Organisation for CIS member states on the management of used nuclear fuel, radioactive waste and decommissioning.
