The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operating licences of units 1 and 2 at the Donald C Cook nuclear plant for an additional 20 years.

The plant generates more than 2100MWe and unit 1 went online in 1975 followed by unit 2 in 1978. The units were originally licensed for 40 years of operation. The licence for unit 1 is now extended to 25 October 2034, and the licence for unit 2 to 23 December 2037.

The DC Cook plant is located about 18km south of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Its owner, American Electric Power, submitted its licence renewal application in late October 2003.
