Norsk Kjernekraft has signed agreements with the Norwegian municipalities of Aure, Heim and Narvik to investigate the possibilities for establishing small modular reactors (SMRs).

The three municipalities will work together with Norsk Kjernekraft to investigate the technical, financial and safety aspects of building one or more SMRs in their area. The investigation will take into account local conditions and the views of local residents.

Norsk Kjernekraft said it will also work closely with the authorities to ensure that any nuclear power projects are in line with Norwegian laws and regulations, and follow the highest standards for safety and environmental protection.

Norsk Kjernekraft Chairman Jonny Hesthammer noted: "This is the first time such an agreement has been entered into in Norway. It is therefore a historic event. We are now starting a collaboration with the aim of using sustainable nuclear power to help ensure sufficient future power in the municipalities. The agreements are the result of the growing interest in nuclear power as a clean, reliable and efficient source of energy with minimal land requirements."
