8 November 2006

Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited’s (JNFL) Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant has begun initial production of MOX fuel as part of its final commissioning tests.

The Rokkasho plant produces MOX through a U-Pu co-denitration process and is expected to start producing MOX powder in mid-November following the calcination, reduction and milling process. Commercial operations are expected to begin in mid-2007. Rokkasho has an 800 tonne/year reprocessing capacity.
