GNS supplies used fuel containers for two German plants

18 July 2018

GNS Gesellschaft für Nuklear-Service mbH and EnBW Kernkraft GmbH on 17 July concluded a contract for the delivery of 41 large Castor V/19 transport and storage containers.

The containers, to be delivered between 2020 and 2025, are intended for the disposal of the used fuel elements from the pressurised water reactors at Germany’s Neckarwestheim 1&2 and Philippsburg 2 nuclear plants. The supply also includes a Castor V/19 for each of the two locations, which is prepared with beakers for holding special fuel rods. The quivers form an independent enclosure for the rods.

Jörg Michels, CEO of EnBW Kernkraft GmbH, explains: "The operation of our interim storage facility will be transferred to the responsible federal company at the turn of the year, but we will continue to be responsible for the careful and safe packaging of the fuel assemblies We will reduce our fuel storage needs until the middle of the next decade."

Dr. Linus Bettermann, sales manager for waste management fuel elements saidthat more than 1200 GNS large containers have been loaded in Germany, and almost 1600 worldwide.
