A new Benson high-pressure boiler has been installed at Areva’s component testing facility in Karlstein, Germany, where testing is carried out on valves and other components that are used in nuclear and fossil plants.

The 60-ton boiler serves as heat source for the various Areva testing facilities. It will begin supplying them with steam starting in November, once it has been connected to the existing infrastructure and commissioning has been completed.

The 7.5-meter-high boiler replaces its predecessor model that was removed by crane on 4 September 2011 because it had been seriously damaged during an explosion in December 2010.

At the Karlstein facility Areva tests, for example, the functions of the passive safety systems of the Kerena boiling water reactor series. The company performs the tests on behalf of international customers, in collaboration with research institutes.
