Rosatom head Sergei Kirienko has called for the establishment of a central authority to control movement of radioactive materials.
At a recent meeting of the Russian National Antiterrorism Committee, he pointed out that the responsibility currently crosses many departments and would be carried out better by one.
“The most important factor in countering the nuclear terrorism threat is having the strictest possible controls over movements of all fissile materials,” he said.
Kirienko also hit out at what he described as “information terrorism”, citing the example of a rumour about a supposed accident at the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant in late May.
“This innocent joke caused panic in several regions across Russia. And I have a clear understanding that this was not by chance or mistake but that it was a well planned action,” he said.
