Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a business agreement with US utility Southern Nuclear Operating Company for cooperation in nuclear engineering including NPP operation, facility maintenance and facility reliability
The two companies plan to strengthen the partnership in the future, including through technology exchange programmes, workshops, and sharing best practices, to strengthen practical engineering capabilities and improve operational performance.
In particular, KHNP, a subsidiary of Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) said, through this collaboration, Kepco hopes to further develop the facility reliability-oriented operating system, which has been in place since the transition to the Engineering System in December 2023.
“This agreement is expected to serve as an opportunity for KHNP engineers to expand their horizons globally and an opportunity for growth in which the domestic engineering system move rapidly forward,” said Kim Young-seung, head of KHNP Engineering Division. “We will continue to work closely with overseas operators and international organisations. We will do our best to complete the Korean engineering system through this cooperation.”
KHNP operates South Korea’s 26 nuclear power reactors with a combined generating capacity of 25,609 MWe, accounting for almost a third of South Korea’s electricity. Three more reactors are under construction. Southern Nuclear Operating Company (a Southern Company subsidiary) operates more than 8,200 MWe of nuclear generating capacity in Alabama and Georgia.
