None of Japan’s fifty nuclear reactors are currently operating, after the Tomari 3 plant was taken offline for planned maintenance on 5 May 2012. However, the restart of the first units could soon be on the cards.
The local assembly of Fukui Prefecture is due to meet this week to discuss whether to approve the restart of two reactors at the Ohi nuclear power plant. The meeting will hear from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency and officials about new safety guidelines that have been drawn up, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) reported.
After the Wednesday meeting the assembly members will hear from local officials and will convey their opinions to the Governor of Fukui.
