Hyundai Steel, Korea’s second-biggest steelmaker, has received quality system certificates (QSC) from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for nuclear material organisation for its steel products. “The ASME QSC certification means the company has been globally recognised in terms of product quality, given those products have satisfied highly demanding quality standards in the global nuclear industry,” the company said.
The certified products include reinforced bars (rebars), section steel and thick steel plate products. It is the first time a Korean steelmaker has obtained ASME QSC certification. Hyundai Steel expects the certification will help it win orders to supply its products for small modular reactors (SMRs) in the United States and other markets.
ASME QSC is a global certification system that evaluates the quality assurance system of materials and components used in nuclear power plants and related industries. ASME strictly examines and certifies whether the supplier’s material and quality management system meets the safety standards of the nuclear industry.
Hyundai Steel expects that it will serve as a basis for expanding its recognition in the global market along with improving reliability in steel for nuclear power plant construction and maintenance.
Since 2006, Hyundai Steel has been supplying products for the construction of NPPs in Korea, including Shin-Kori 1&2, Shin Wolsong 1&2 and Shin-Kori 5&6. In 2011, it also secured overseas supply through the UAE’s Barakah NPP Project.
