The National Cooperative for the Storage of Radioactive Waste (NAGRA) in Switzerland has submitted documentation demonstrating the feasibility of how and where spent fuel, high-level radioactive waste (HLW) and long-lived intermediate-level waste can be safely disposed of in Switzerland.

The federal safety authorities will now evaluate the reports with a view to allowing the Federal Council to decide in around 2006 on further measures for the management of these wastes. Identification of a site remains the subject of a later general licence procedure.

The documentation is based on the Opalinus Clay project, which showed that the Opalinus Clay in the Z├╝rcher Weinland region is suitable as a host rock for a deep disposal facility for HLW.
