Framatome has signed a contract for the maintenance and modernisation of electrical systems for the two VVER-1000 reactors at Bulgaria’s Kozloduy NPP. The maintenance work will be coordinated by Bulgarian subsidiary Framatome EOOD.
The no break power supply systems at Kozloduy were first renovated by Framatome during a previous modernisation programme in the 2000s. They will now be upgraded again with new components meeting the highest international performance standards, reinforcing the safety level of both reactors.
“We are proud to contribute to the lifetime extension of the Kozloduy power plant,” said Guirec Maugat Senior Executive Vice President, Installed Base Business Unit of Framatome. “The renewal of this multi-year service contract reaffirms the solid partnership between Framatome and Kozloduy NPP, built over two decades.” The contract is part of the lifetime extension of the reactors.
In recent years, Framatome has strengthened its local footprint with the creation of Framatome EOOD in 2021 to support the operation of the Kozloduy plant and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Sofia Technical University (TU-Sofia) in 2024 to explore and implement opportunities for collaboration in education and training in the field of nuclear energy.
Currently, Kozloduy NPP operates two Soviet-built VVER-1000 reactors (units 5&6). Bulgaria was obliged to close four older VVER-440 units as a condition for accession to the European Union, even though the units had undergone significant safety upgrades. In February 2024, Bulgaria and the US signed a formal agreement to collaborate on the construction of two new units at the Kozloduy NPP (7&8).
