The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for a revision of the Euratom treaty.

Addressing the next European Union inter-governmental conference, it requested the convening of a separate conference “in order to repeal the obsolete and outdated provisions of the treaty”, and to deal with the “promotion of nuclear energy and the lack of democratic decision-making procedures.” Friends of the Earth Europe also insists the treaty needs replacing by measures that reflect concern about public safety, environmental protection, and democratic accountability. It argued: “If in future Europe is to get most of its energy from renewable sources, it must redirect subsidies and investments from nuclear power (and fossil fuels) to energy efficiency and renewables.”
