The Spanish government is apparently considering reform plans that will allow the public nuclear waste management company, Enresa, the right to expropriate whatever land it deems adequate for the construction of storage facilities for radioactive waste.
The company, which oversees Spain’s nuclear waste, will be granted the right to expropriate land anywhere in the country in order to streamline the construction of a centralised deposit for radioactive materials without having to negotiate with current owners.
Some 160 tonnes of radioactive waste are produced annually by Spain’s 9 nuclear power plants.
