Clean up of the Pile Fuel Storage Pond at the UK’s Sellafield site in Cumbria has moved a step forward with the installation of a Local Effluent Treatment Plant (LETP).
The 20 tonne device is capable of cleaning up 125 m3 of the 14,000 m3 of water in the 55 year-old ponds to reduce radioactivity during sludge retrievals, accelerating the sludge retrievals programme. The module was fully assembled off site by Chorley-based NIS Ltd and was lifted directly into the pond to reduce overall installation and commissioning time. Preparation work by the project team has been underway for several months, including the successful removal of four skips from the pond and preparing the pond floor.
The installation is the first piece of equipment on the site that has been commissioned by British Nuclear Group’s specialist contracting arm, Project Services.
