The European Commission is threatening Sweden with legal action at the European Court of Justice over its failure to pass national rules insisting upon environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for the decommissioning of nuclear stations.
Brussels is claiming that the EU’s EIA directive requires that the dismantling of plants and reactors should be subject to planning consent, following an EIA. The Commission said that Sweden promised to amend its national legislation, but it still has not lodged the necessary notification with Brussels. Concern was sparked when Swedish authorities started to dismantle the Barsebäck 1 nuclear reactor without such an assessment.
