A meeting at the office of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) subsidiary CNNC Overseas Ltd (CNOS), responsible for overseas projects, was attended by Uzbekistan’s Uzatom Agency, Russia’s Rosatom, and China’s Shanghai Electric. The purpose was to assess Shanghai Electric’s manufacturing capabilities for turbine equipment and explore the potential for adapting this equipment to meet the requirements of Uzatom’s planned NPP.
Discussions covered development, production, and delivery of equipment for the non-nuclear island of the NPP in line with established technical standards. The Chinese side proposed the possibility of signing a trilateral agreement between Uzatom, Rosatom, and CNNC. This would define CNNC’s role and responsibilities in NPP construction. Uzatom, in cooperation with international partners, is working to implement the project, with a strong focus on integrating advanced technologies and collaborating with trusted equipment suppliers.
Shanghai Electric is one of China’s leading manufacturers of power and turbine equipment for nuclear and thermal power plants. The company has supplied equipment for the non-nuclear islands of 39 NPPs – 37 in China and two in Pakistan. Its product range includes turbogenerators with capacities from 50 to 1,240 MWe.
Rosatom’s engineering division, Atomstroyexport (ASE) signed a contract to build a small capacity NPP with Uzatom’s NPP Construction Directorate in May 2024. The project calls for building a 330 MW Russian-designed NPP with six 55 MW reactors in Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh Region. Work on setting up a construction and assembly base at the site of the future plant began in mid-April. Uzatom expects to receive a permit to build the plant at the beginning of 2026 for operation in stages in 2029-2033.
