The southern island province of Hainan is expected to become the site of a new nuclear power station, according to official state media.
China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) is in talks with Hainan government, although final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission is still required. Further talks on the project are expected next year as part of three years CNNC is expected to spend on preliminary preparations before the five-year infrastructure programme commences.
Ten potential construction sites have been investigated and the capacity for the plant will depend on the power demand forecast.
The Hainan plant could be included in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) or later.
