Environmental group Earthlife Africa is to sue state-owned power giant Eskom in order to obtain information about the new pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR) planned for Koeberg near Cape Town in South Africa.

The lawsuit challenges a decision by Eskom to refuse Earthlife Africa’s application under the Access to Information Act to minutes of the company’s board meetings concerning the PBMR.

Earthlife Africa argues that safety and economic issues for the PBMR must have been discussed by the board and believes that the public has a right to know all the risks and impacts as the project involves public funds.

The case is to be heard in the High Court in Johannesburg on 30 August.
