Final SRS transuranic waste arrives at US WIPP facility

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Environmental Management (EM) said that the final container of legacy transuranic (TRU) waste from Savannah River Site (SRS) had arrived at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) for permanent disposal on 14 April, capping the end of a journey for 239 shipments that began in 2011.

South Korea offers to construct Poland’s first NPP

South Korea’s state-owned Korea Hydro Nuclear Power (KHNP) said it had submitted a formal offer to build Poland’s first nuclear power plant. Poland plans to build nuclear power plants to reduce its carbon emissions and gradually phase out coal and is seeking a partner to build 6-9GWe of nuclear capacity and provide 49% equity financing for the project.

Poland’s KGHM and TAURON to co-operate on SMRs

Polish companies KGHM and TAURON have signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation in the construction of low-emission energy sources, including the use of small modular reactors (SMRs). The agreement was reached during the TOGETAIR 2022 Climate Summit in Warsaw. KGHM is a copper and silver producer and large industrial energy user and TAURON an energy company.

US DOE to accelerate removal of used fuel from Savannah River Site

The US Department of Energy (DOE) said that Environmental Management (EM) Senior Advisor William White has approved a proposal to save decades of work and billions of dollars in used nuclear fuel disposition at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The Accelerated Basin De-inventory (ABD) mission will allow SRS to process all remaining used fuel in the L Basin storage area through H Canyon without recovery of highly enriched uranium, and immobilise the resulting dissolved material to be disposed in the future.

NuScale Power signs collaboration agreement with US Reactor Forging Consortium

US-based NuScale Power and the US Reactor Forging Consortium (RFC) have announced that they have signed a Collaboration Agreement. The deal is set to leverage the existing US forging supply chain to prepare NuScale to deploy its small modular reactor (SMR) technology to customers worldwide and to support US manufacturing jobs.

Indian regulator approves construction of two new units in Karnataka
