Preparations for COP29 underway

The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29) will convene in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The event will be led by Azerbaijan Ecology Minister Mukhtar Babayev.

Tractebel report looks at powering data centres with advanced reactors

Belgium-based Tractebel (part of France’s Engie) and its subsidiary company RED, have published a White Paper on how advanced reactors, including small modular reactors (SMRs), can supply energy to data centre communities. “Powering the 4th Industrial Revolution – Pioneering Data Centre Partnerships with Advanced Nuclear Technology” says data usage and processing are poised to undergo a radical expansion. The 32-page report notes “our ever-growing need for heightened connectivity and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our daily requirements for efficiency, creativity, and automation of repetitive tasks”.

ENEC announces start up of Barakah 4

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced that its operating and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company, has successfully launched the reactor of unit 4 of the Barakah NPP in the Al Dhafra Region of Abu Dhabi. This marks its initial production of heat through nuclear fission, used for generating electricity by turning a turbine with steam. In the coming weeks, Unit 4 will be linked to the national electricity grid and will gradually increase its power output to full capacity.

Transmutex raises finance for thorium fuelled subcritical nuclear system

Geneva-based Transmutex SA has announced new round of financing to develop its nuclear energy technology”. The Swiss startup, founded in 2019 by scientists from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) including Federico Carminati and Jean-Pierre Revol along with entrepreneur Franklin Servan-Schreiber.

Newcleo and NAAREA partner to support fast reactor development

UK-based nuclear technology company newcleo has announced a strategic and industrial partnership with France's NAAREA designed "to support all players in their industrial, technological, scientific and regulatory development" of Generation IV fast neutron reactors.
