First US-African nuclear summit concludes in Ghana

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear Energy has concluded the first-ever US Africa Nuclear Energy Summit (USANES) in Accra, Ghana. The summit was organised in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and the Nuclear Power Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. DOE said it “provided a platform for crucial dialogues and international cooperation on nuclear energy” where “participants from across the continent discussed the future of nuclear power and laid a foundation for sustainable nuclear energy growth in the region”.

New consortium to develop and globally deploy lead-cooled fast reactors

Belgium, Italy and Romania have formed a consortium with US-based Westinghouse Electric to develop a small modular lead-cooled fast neutron reactor (SMR-LFR). Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in the presence of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, who was on an official visit to Brussels, and representatives from the Italian and US embassies in Belgium. The organisations taking part in the project, along with Westinghouse, are: Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare and National Agency for New Technologies, Energy & Sustainable Economic Development ENEA (Agenzia nazionale per le nuove tecnologie, l'energia e lo sviluppo economico sostenibile); Romanian Atomic Energy Technology Company RATEN (Regia Autonoma Tehnologii pentru Energia Nucleara); and Belgian nuclear research centre SCK CEN.

Grossi opens IAEA General Conference

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, who has been reappointed for a second four-year term as Director General beginning December 2023, in his opening address to the 67th General Conference, referred to US President Dwight D Eisenhower’s ‘Atoms for Peace’ speech in 1953. He noted that his vision has become an important, active part of the IAEA’s contribution towards international peace and security and furthering sustainable development. “The IAEA is the operational instrument of this noble cause,” Grossi said.

China launches test platform for uranium extraction from seawater

China National Nuclear Corporation’s (CNNC's) test platform for uranium extraction from seawater has been put into operation and opened to the public in Hainan Province. The test platform, in the South China Sea, is able to carry out material verification and amplification experiments under real ocean conditions. It has a total area of about 670 square metres.

Uganda plans to begin nuclear power generation by 2031

Ugandan Energy & Minerals Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu said in a statement that Uganda expects to start generating at least 1000 MWe from nuclear power by 2031. This is part of Uganda’s moves to diversify its sources of electricity and accelerate its energy transition in response to climate change.
