EDF’s NUWARD SMR to be case study for European regulatory review

EDF has announced that its Small Modular Reactor NUWARD will be the case study for a European early joint regulatory review led by the French Safety Authority (ASN) with the participation of the Czech (SUJB) and Finnish (STUK) safety authorities. EDF said that, by this action, it was fostering European cooperation and supporting the acceleration of international SMR licensing, creating momentum towards harmonisation of SMR regulations.

Finland’s Green Party supports nuclear power

Finland’s Green Party (Vihreät De Gröna) has voted by a large majority at its party conference to adopt a pro-nuclear approach. The party manifesto now states that nuclear is “sustainable energy” and demands the reform of current energy legislation to streamline the approval process for small modular reactors (SMRs). Finland’s is the first Green Party to adopt such a position.

MHI reports progress of business plan including nuclear

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced the progress of its 2021 Medium-Term Business Plan, which covers the three years from FY2021 to FY2023. It includes a section on decarbonising existing infrastructure and nuclear power’s contributions to decarbonisation.

Argentina optimistic about nuclear ties with China

Argentina hopes to begin construction of a new NPP later this year, José Luis Antúnez, president of nuclear utility Nucleoeléctrica SA (NA-SA) told Diálogo Chino on 21 April. Diálogo Chino describes itself as “the only independent journalism platform dedicated to better understanding the China-Latin America relationship and its sustainable development challenges”. The new NPP, Atucha III, will be constructed at the same complex as Atucha I and II, in Zárate, about 100 km north of Buenos Aires. It will generate 1,200 MWe and cost $8 billion, with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) expected to finance the majority of the project. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) will provide the Hualong One reactor.
