Nuclear authorities seek justification for use of Newcleo reactor in the UK

UK nuclear trade association, the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has applied for a justification decision for newcleo’s lead-cooled fast reactor design, the LFR-AS-200. The application makes the case that the benefits of clean, firm, flexible power from the LFR-AS-200 would far outweigh any potential risks. NIA says these are” rigorously controlled by robust safety features, including passive safety systems, built into the design and incorporated into the operating arrangements, in line with the UK’s regulatory requirements”.
Brazil signs contracts for expansion of its uranium enrichment plant

Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) has signed a contract with Amazônia Azul Tecnologias de Defesa (Amazul) to support expansion of the Isotopic Uranium Enrichment Plant at the Nuclear Fuel Factory (FCN - Fábrica de Combustível Nuclear) in Resende. Amazul will provide engineering services for the development of phase two of the plant.
Nuclear industry calls on G7 to support development

During a Nuclear Energy Forum, held in Sapporo, Japan, alongside the meeting of G7 ministers on climate, energy and environment, a declaration was issued by nuclear trade associations emphasising the importance of nuclear energy for transition a clean and sustainable energy future. Signatories included the World Nuclear Association (WNA), the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA), Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF), nucleareurope, the US Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the UK's Nuclear Industry Association (NIA).
UK selects site for first fusion energy plant

The UK government has announced that the West Burton power station site in Nottinghamshire has been selected to host STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production), the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant which is planned to be built by 2040.

Following the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on 9 August and its warning of a “code red for humanity”, the UK Nuclear Institute said it agrees that “catastrophe can be avoided if the world acts fast”. Recognising the great ambition for nuclear energy to play a significant role in our future energy mix and its potential to catalyse investment in industry in the regions, as laid out by Government in the Prime Minister’s 10 Point Plan and the Energy White Paper, the NI is urging Government and industry to collaborate and “increase the pace” of nuclear deployment to reach Net Zero.
UK NIA says electricity imports undermine energy security

The UK Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) noted on 5 August that the UK had imported more electricity in July than ever before in its history, threatening its energy security by relying on power from abroad instead of investing in its own green energy future. Analysis of Gridwatch data shows that UK electricity imports reached their highest ever monthly level in July. Figures from National Grid ESO also show imports accounted for 15% of all of UK electricity in July, with a 20% increase in the year-to-date average compared with last year.
UK cross-sector report plans zero-carbon hydrogen from nuclear

The UK's Nuclear Sector Deal’s Innovation Group on 14 July published a new report, “Unlocking the UK’s Nuclear Hydrogen Economy to Support Net Zero”. The 16-page report, a cross-sector action plan for consideration by the Nuclear Industry Council, offers 10 recommendations for realising the opportunity of zero-carbon hydrogen from nuclear energy. It follows a Nuclear Hydrogen Roundtable event, which brought together over 80 experts and industry leaders from across the hydrogen value chain.

Biden’s American Jobs Plan focuses on green energy with some support for nuclear

US President Joseph Biden on 31 March announced a $2,000bn American Jobs Plan which, among other things, proposed investments to tackle climate change including the development of advanced nuclear reactors and more efficient use of the USA's existing NPP fleet. The plan “is an investment in America that will create millions of good jobs, rebuild our country’s infrastructure, and position the United States to out-compete China”, according to the White House statement. It “will invest in America in a way we have not invested since we built the interstate highways and won the Space Race”.
