G7 acknowledges need for nuclear despite differences on energy policy

The Group of Seven (G7) nations undertook to support the use of nuclear energy in countries that opt for its use, following a two-day Ministerial Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Italy. The G7 includes Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the USA as well as the European Union. The ministerial meeting was in preparation for the G7 summit planned for June.

Nuclear Energy Summit attracts world leaders

World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Russia and Hungary confirm progress at Paks II

Following talks in Budapest, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, and Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade Peter Szijjártó confirmed that work on the construction of new power units at the Paks NPP (Paks II) is proceeding at a rapid pace. The Paks II project was launched in 2014 by an inter-governmental agreement between Hungary and Russia for two VVER-1200 reactors (units 5&6) to be supplied by Rosatom. The contract was supported by a Russian state loan to finance the majority of the project.

IEA Ministerial Meeting stresses energy security and clean energy transition

The International Energy Agency's (IEA's) 2024 Ministerial Meeting and 50th Anniversary event, co-chaired by France and Ireland, emphasised a commitment to safeguard energy security while speeding up clean energy transitions. The meeting, which was attended energy and climate ministers representing some 50 countries, sought to increase cooperation with major emerging economies, including talks with India on its request for full membership, and the establishment of a regional cooperation centre in Singapore.

Five EPC companies express interest in Kozloduy expansion project

Kozloduy NPP subsidiary, Kozloduy NPP-Newbuild (KZNPP-NM - Kozloduy NPP Novi Mostnosti) has announced that five companies have expressed interest in building units 7&8 at Bulgaria’s Kozloduy NPP under an EPC (engineering, procurement & construction) contract. KZNPP-NM invited expressions of interest in January with applications to be submitted by 2 February.

Czech government extends nuclear tender to four reactors but excludes Westinghouse

The Czech government has decided to amend its tender for new nuclear to binding offers for up to four reactors, rather than one and invited bids only from Électricité de France (EDF) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP). The third bidder, Westinghouse, was not included because it "did not meet the necessary conditions".

Estonian working group assesses nuclear energy potential
