Western Australia poll finds some support for uranium mining

13 July 2005

According to the latest Westpoll research, 48% of all West Australians want the state government to lift its ban on uranium mining, but a further 40% are against lifting the ban.

Similarly, while 40% believe that nuclear energy should be considered as a power source, 51% of respondents are opposed to nuclear energy.

The state government remains opposed to lifting the ban, despite industry royalty estimates of at least $25 million a year and with a rapidly rising uranium price.

However, while there is an obvious division across the state on the uranium mining and nuclear power issues, a massive 84% said they did not want the government to consider offering a site in the state of Western Australia for waste storage.
