Ventilation pipe installed at Rooppur 1

28 July 2023

The ventilation pipe has been installed at the unit 1 reactor building of the Rooppur NPP under construction in Bangladesh. The pipe weights 100 tonnes and is 67 metres long. The installation, carried out using a powerful crane, lasted eight hours. First it was moved into a vertical position and was raised several metres to check the slings and the stability of the crane. Only then was it delivered to the mounting area.

“With the completion of the installation of a ventilation pipe, which is designed to remove excess heat and moisture from the reactor compartment, the upper level of the reactor building is now more than 99.5 metres, With the lightning rod it reaches 101 metres, exceeded in height only by the 175-metre evaporation cooling tower,” noted the vice president of JSC Atomstroyexport and director of the project for the construction of the Rooppur NPP, Alexey Deriy. “Now, work on the installation of large-sized equipment will continue at the unit. In August, installation of elements of the passive heat removal system will progress - one of the most important safety systems in the reactor building.”

The Rooppur plant is being built by Rosatom on the eastern bank of the Ganges River in Bangladesh’s Pabna district, about 160 km northwest of Dhaka. It will comprise two VVER-1200 reactors. In November 2011, Russia and Bangladesh signed an inter-governmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of the NPP and in mid-December 2015, a general contract was signed. Construction began in 2021. Construction of the unit 1 began in November 2017 and unit 2 in July 2018. All the plant's fuel is being provided by Rosatom under a contract finalised in August 2019, and the final protocol approving deliver was signed in May. The used fuel will be returned to Russia for processing.
