Studsvik to recycle Finnish heat exchangers

22 February 2010

Studsvik has signed an agreement with the Finnish nuclear power plant TVO for treatment and recycling of end-of-life heat exchangers. The order value is about SEK 25 million ($3.5 million).

The Finnish heat exchangers, weighing in total about 700 tonnes, are to be treated in 2010 and 2011. Residual products from the treatment will be sent back to Finland for final storage.

With Studsvik's treatment concept it is usually possible to free release and recycle 80-90% of the metals in components, which both reduces storage costs and environmental impact.

To date Studsvik has treated end-of-life components from both Sweden and other countries and in 2009 won a contract to treat about 3200 tonnes of components from Canada.
