Reduction of Hanford waste

3 September 2003

Framatome ANP has been awarded a contract by Bechtel to design, analyse and fabricate three evaporator systems in support of the River Protection Project at the US Department of Energy's Hanford site.

The evaporator systems will be an integral part of the Waste Treatment Plant where over 230 million litres of liquid, high-level radioactive waste will be treated prior to vitrification. The evaporator systems will significantly reduce the volume of liquid. The liquid waste which amounts to 60% of the high-level radioactive waste in the USA is currently stored in 177 underground tanks.
